3. New things to do in Nioh 2

New things to do in Nioh 2
Developer Team Ninja is back with a brutal follow-up to the 2017 Nioh game, taking advantage of the lessons of its previous release to offer a wide range of new features and improvements that fans demanded. So take a closer look.

1. Create your own character

Create your own character
Nioh 2 includes a deep character creativity set that allows you to fully customize your character and define every part of your look, from length, structure, and gender, up to the extent of your hair curls.

You have more freedom than before to represent the type of character you want, whether by working in secret as a homeless assassin who is able to play Ninjutsu or crushing your enemies as a huge wild beast with an ax.

You will also be able to determine the appearance of your demonic Yukai model, but we will further expand on this topic later!

2. Try new weapons

Try new weapons
All of your favorite Nioh weapons, such as your Japanese sword, kusarigama, and spear, go back to Nioh 2 with countless variables that can be plundered from defeated enemies, discovered around the world, or made by mourning.

But besides that, you will be able to use three new types of weapons, each with different action combos and game modes that suit different fighting styles.
  • Switchglaive weapon: This giant mutant Hybrid weapon consisting of a spear and a machete is stable and powerful. In addition to its versatility, it has an impressive reach when it turns into a full-length destructive force in the shape of a machete and when folded, it is ideal for quick successive cutting. And with the mastery of its use, you can even switch between the two shapes in the middle of the attack.
  • Small axes: Small axes combine a variety of wide-ranging attacks and fast gusts like wind gusts, so they prefer agile gameplay modes. Large-scale attacks are ideal for intercepting and surprising enemies in the middle of a group of strikes or causing damage while maintaining distance. Meanwhile, quick hit kits are ideal for exhausting an opponent's Ki technology with swiping techniques.
  • Odachi weapon: Although added to Nioh as part of the downloadable content, this huge Japanese sword will be a new weapon for many returning players. This versatile weapon surprisingly combines sweeping attacks, massive rushes, and even flips over the terrifying head. Its staggering length results in special punishment, thanks to its large downstrokes, while the skill tree provides fast attacks like Twin Moons and Dawn's Light.

3. Direct your inner Yokai

Direct your inner Yokai
The first of these is Burst Counter Destroyer, an advanced flushing technology that can, in time, neutralize the enemy's attack force and inflict serious damage on Ki technology.

Additionally, you can also grab the skills of defeated brutal opponents. Defeating the more powerful Yokai characters rewards you with the "Soul Core" element, the beating heart of Yokai's essence, which you can take advantage of his abilities to use for yourself.

There are many Yokai abilities that you can collect in all parts of the game and you can switch between the ones you already collected in temples. You can set a maximum of two capacities at any time (we can activate by pressing the R2 key and pressing the "square" or "triangle" button), so take your time to experience the best ability.

All of these abilities are related to the new "Anima" scale (the purple bar below your strength), so their uses are limited, but using them strategically, your inner diabolical abilities can be a game-changer.

4. Summon the dead to help you

Summon the dead to help you
In Nioh, the deaths of other players left behind the "Tomb of Return from Death". These sinister red signs can be used to summon the dead soul of that warrior, with all his shields and weapons, to your world. And if you can defeat the return from death, you will gain elements of its equipment, so that defeating you from the more powerful death brings better spoils.

In Nioh 2, the graves of those returning from death still appear but are supplemented by the graves of those who love goodness. If you own the Ochoko Cup, these blue flags can summon the lives of other defeated warriors, not to take part in the battle, but to help you on your journey.

These comrades fight alongside you until defeat, and if you have a special item called "Righteous Jasper", you can leave the graves of good lovers to others.

5. Become a living demon

Become a living demon
When the Amrita Gauge is full (you'll know because the Spirit Guardian icon will start to glow), you can press the Triangle and Circle buttons to launch the "Yokai Transformation".

All forms of Satan benefit from enhanced attack and defense, but their game modes vary greatly depending on the Spirit Guardian you have equipped. Here are three examples you'll encounter early:
  • Brute: As the name implies, this heavy hitter can both do harm and bear it. It is suitable for rough attack.
  • Feral: Feral, Faster, Fierce format fights violent groups with agility.
  • Phantom: The Phantom shape is designed to take greater advantage of distance and magic, and can throw deadly projectiles while maintaining a safe distance.

6. Overthrow all your new enemies

Overthrow all your new enemies
In Nioh 2, developer Team Ninja has greatly expanded the variety of enemies you will face, especially between the exhausting and deadly Yokai.

With a wider and more diverse set of opponents, the demand for greater flexibility in how to deal with each confrontation appears: planning and strategy remain a key factor, but the balance between your weapons, abilities and your Yokai skills is more important than ever.

You can watch a whole bunch of new friends at the TGS 2019 demo event show (right) or you can look below for a detailed look at three of our favorite add-ons.
  • Ippon-Datara: It is a monster with one eye and one foot, the rotten shape of a sword maker. Although he uses large hammers and an odachi weapon, he can also steer powerful kicks.
  • Waira: Waira has a nearly always submerged bulky body, and nobody knows its true complete form, but the two are known as the front claws, ideal for pricking the unsuspecting mates.
  • Yamanba: impersonating a frail old woman, Yamanba uses her humble appearance to attract unprepared victims, ambush travelers and kill them with a sharp knife.

7. Pass greater and more diversified levels

Pass greater and more diversified levels
The developers in Team Ninja have focused in particular on the diversity of levels, both in terms of how those spaces are organized and how they appear. To this end, expect a wide range of levels, some of which are flat and wandering, while others will be very stepwise, relying on vertical movements, such as stairs, stairs, sliding doors and more, to reach the endpoint.

Not only that, drawing on the notes from the first game, Team Ninja also adopted a more vibrant color-in-game style, making use of the Japanese natural color palette to draw the world more vividly.

8. Little knowledge about Japanese history

Little knowledge about Japanese history
For Nioh, this meant moving the players to the floundering decades of the ending Sengoku era. However, in order to add a broader context to this conflict and era, Team Ninja designed Nioh 2 in the less active early part of that era, highlighting some of the events that led to the turmoil.
